Does anyone here do drag-hunting? I watched this documentary on H&C TV about the Cheshire Drag Hunt and was completely in aw! I've always known about hunting, as there is a few meets in my area but I was like many, and didn't understand. But this documentary opened my eyes slightly and gave me this insight view from the riders eyes and I'm really keen to do it. Although I can't imagine myself, and Fergus my new boy - when I get him in Feb, flying across hedges and ditches! But I would like to know what exactly does it involve? And can someone who isn't very confident jumping solid fences still take part?

I know that you dont have to jump anything when out hunting, especially in drag hunts cos they pick the route and will choose one with a variety of fences and good gates, I am so jelous of anybody hunting, i would love to go but sadly not allowed on bonnie alot of hunts and pony clubs do children/newcomers days some even do talks about what it involves xxxx

Hey Sarah i dont know to much about it but Kim went on a drag hunt 2 xmas's ago at Dun & massey.....everyone met at a designated pub, all assembled on horse back, everyone drank some kind of hot punch then off they went, they had big jumps and smaller jumps at every fence so you got to choose, then back to the pub for 5 mins then off agian,,,,,Kim gave up at the 1/2 way stage cos her pony was being a cow and over took the huntmaster wich did'nt amuse him!!!! we have never been since lol

I used to hunt years ago & always found drag hunting more tiring than fox but a good day out. You don't have to jump there is always ways round them. We still go to the boxing day & new year hunt meets and follow them by car with hot toddies & mince pies.

Aw thanks guys for your information. I'll have a look online and see what I can find out, if not then I'm sure my yard manager will know if there are any newcomers days. MB, how can't you do it on Bonnie? SD! Haha, your poor friend! I hope Fergus doesn't do that! Lol. I know he can be quite strong, but he's not nasty the way he does it. He just loves to gallop! (As I found out when I went to ride him again last weekend, we went for a gallop with the man's daughter and her highland, and I couldn't stop him! ;D ) Is it quite tiring Bev? I amen't the fittest, but I think Ferg should be ok, he seems really fit 'cause he's a deerstalker! Lol. Thats nice you do that, I'd quite fancy some toddie, or voddie for that matter when I finish. I will deffo be getting me one of them flasks! Infact, I should just have a couple of nips and get my adrenaline going! xx

Im still yet to go on my first meet. For me its £5 a time because Im a member of the pony club. I was supposed to go to north east cheshire in september but it was called off. As others have said there is always a way around! First timers are to wear green ribbons in tails just incase you do decide to jump and pony does a naughty stop and you have someone following you. Never overtake the huntmaster, hugge no no. Yo's a big boff on this hunting lark lol.

sarah & Ed, you can go, just need to contact your local or chosen hunts and speak to Hunt secretary about your concerns and they will inform you oif a suitable meet. No-one is exempt unless you know you have a complete nutter of a horse who'd be a danger to others!
